A Mending I go Again!
Well this time the mending was all mine - not one item for my DD. the first item up for bid is a ready to wear dress. The elastic on the cuffs had lost its oomph. I undid just a small portion of each wristband, took out the bad elastic and cut new. These are tiny cuffs so I had to use 1/8 inch elastic. We are not friends this size and me (my sewing machine agrees and refuses to even allow this size near its feed dogs). I hand stitched the ends together and then closed up the stitching I had opened to insert the new elastic. Turned out great - many more wears will occur.
Next up was a knit skirt I picked up at a thrift store a few years ago. The elastic in this had also lost its oomph while I was wearing it. My dear mother always said my wide child bearing hips would come in handy some time. She spoke the truth they kept the skirt up so no wardrobe malfunction occurred at work. I never noticed someone had already had some waistband issues with the skirt. The sewing they did was something else once I got into the project. Like a lot of things in life it turned out to be way more work than you originally planned. Also when I got the waistband detached I was surprised the elastic had not given out way before - it was random lengths of elastic stitched together. I think there were 5 different lengths cobbled together. Just when I think my sewing is not up to par the universe tells me otherwise. I tossed out that wreck of a sewing repair, measured new elastic (the 1/2 inch variety - a personal favorite), inserted it in the waistband and reattached everything. I always think I should recreate this skirt design and then I wake back up to reality. Too many ideas, not enough time. Also the stripes on this skirt actually match on the seam so kudos to the original sewer.
The last repair was to a made by me item. I thought at first what shoddy seamtress sewed this side seam with not enough pocket allowance so the pocket began to detach itself. Hey, wait that is me - I made this, cancel those naughty words spoken in haste. I managed to salvage this pocket. This pair of pants was is a muslin from an old bed sheet. Damn these are some of the most comfortable pants I own. They fit perfectly and I did not even try to match stripes but somehow the stars aligned and they look fantastic.
In answer to the question no one is asking. Yes I am still quilting the never ending lap quilt.
