Not a favorite dress (No es un vestido favorito)

Despite my misgivings about ruching in clothing I bought a dress pattern from one of my favorite PDF pattern makers. Now at least once or twice I have accidently made ruching in a dress but this time I was going to try to do it on purpose.

A pesar de mis dudas sobre los fruncidos en la ropa, compré un patrón de vestido en uno de mis creadores de patrones PDF favoritos. Al menos una o dos veces he fruncido un vestido sin querer, pero esta vez iba a intentar hacerlo a propósito.

I have decided I do not like the look especially on the front of the dress. The jury is still out on side ruching. I just think it makes an outfit look messy and I am always tugging on it to make it look good. If you happen to live in the I love ruching camp good for you it is just not a look for me.

He decidido que no me gusta el look, sobre todo en la parte delantera del vestido. Aún no hay una opinión definitiva sobre el fruncido lateral. Creo que hace que el conjunto se vea descuidado y siempre estoy tirando de él para que se vea bien. Si eres de las que les encantan los fruncidos, ¡qué suerte!, simplemente no es un look para mí.

It turns out that the ruching was not the only issue I encountered with this make - the fabric. I am beginning to dislike cotton lycra as a fabric to sew. First there is the curling after being cut out. I can make it behave but the curling on every seam when I try to sew it is annoying. I dislike having to use my teacher voice in the sewing studio. I also find the fabric distorts more than other knit fabrics I use.

Resulta que el fruncido no fue el único problema que encontré con esta confección, sino la tela. Me está empezando a disgustar la licra de algodón para coser. Primero, se riza después de cortarla. Puedo hacer que se comporte bien, pero la curvatura en cada costura al intentar coserla es molesta. No me gusta tener que usar mi voz de profesora en el taller de costura. También encuentro que la tela se deforma más que otras telas de punto que uso.

I once belonged to a fabric club from a pattern maker. I received a box of 2 yards of fabric every month. The fabric seemed very nice, but after a few months I realized since I was unable to pick fabric type of colors I was not actually making anything with the fabric I received because it did not speak to me. I cancelled my subscription (side note: about 4 months after I cancelled I noticed the company was no longer doing a fabric subscription - maybe I was not the only one who disliked not selecting a fabric and/or color).

Una vez pertenecí a un club de telas de una patronista. Recibía una caja de 2 yardas de tela cada mes. La tela parecía muy bonita, pero después de unos meses me di cuenta de que, como no podía elegir el tipo de tela ni los colores, no estaba haciendo nada con la tela que recibía porque no me convencía. Cancelé mi suscripción (nota al margen: unos 4 meses después de cancelar, me di cuenta de que la empresa ya no ofrecía suscripciones de telas; quizá no era la única a la que le molestaba no poder elegir una tela o un color).

Anywoo.. in one of the boxes I received 2 yards of cotton lycra cherries on a black background. I thought the fabric was cute but hadn’t really found its matching pattern destiny. Enter the ruched dress - well, well I will give both the fabric and pattern a spin. In hindsight this was probably a good idea because…when I washed the fabric I found the black background color seemed to fade and look old, but only in parts of the fabric cut. Okay strike one on the project.

En fin... en una de las cajas recibí 2 yardas de licra de algodón con cerezas sobre fondo negro. La tela me pareció bonita, pero no había encontrado el patrón perfecto. Y ahora, el vestido fruncido... bueno, voy a probar tanto la tela como el patrón. En retrospectiva, probablemente fue una buena idea porque... al lavar la tela, el color negro del fondo parecía desteñido y antiguo, pero solo en algunas partes del corte. Bueno, un punto débil del proyecto.

How long have you been here - you know there is a modification coming up real soon. The back bodice piece was cut on the fold and then there was a pattern piece to cut a small strip of fabric to make a back binding.

Okay annoyance number one if you are going to line the front piece of a bodice but not the back I just think it looks strange. Also at least for me those pesky little strips of back binding never lay flat and sometimes cause naughty words to be uttered. Therefore I went off script and cut another piece of back bodice for the lining.

Además, al menos para mí, esas molestas tiras del bies trasero nunca quedan planas y a veces provocan malas palabras. Así que me salí del guion y corté otro trozo de la parte trasera del corpiño para el forro.

I simply sewed the front and back bodice pieces together at the shpulder seam and treated them as one lining piece. Plus no binding drama. The front bodice pieces had to be joined and then elastic was added to make the ruching. The lining piece was attached. A quick try on and I was not a happy camper. It seemed like the bodice pieces were not hanging correctly on my actual body. The back had the dreaded gap and I was mostly concerned with that so did take too much notice of the front.

Simplemente cosí las piezas del corpiño delantero y trasero por la costura del hombro y las traté como una sola pieza de forro. Además, no fue un problema de ribete. Tuve que unir las piezas del corpiño delantero y luego añadir elástico para hacer el fruncido. La pieza del forro estaba fijada. Me lo probé rápidamente y no quedé contenta. Parecía que las piezas del corpiño no me quedaban bien. La espalda tenía el temido hueco, y eso me preocupaba sobre todo, así que presté demasiada atención a la parte delantera.

I decided not to panic yet and wait until the skirt was attached knowing the weight of the skirt might make the back gap disappear. This is where the basting stitch on your sewing machine comes in very handy. You can put an item together using a basting stitch and then fix everything you don’t like before making a committment to sewing or serging the real deal. Is basting the Tinder of the sewing world?

Decidí no entrar en pánico todavía y esperar a que la falda estuviera cosida, sabiendo que el peso podría hacer que el hueco trasero desapareciera. Aquí es donde el hilván en la máquina de coser resulta muy útil. Puedes coser una prenda con un hilván y luego arreglar todo lo que no te guste antes de decidirte a coser o rematar. ¿Es el hilván el Tinder de la costura?

Went on to attach the sleeves which actually went quite well and the sleeve head sat correctly on my shoulders. The skirt portion had pockets. I should have practiced more of my attaching side pockets without adding a 3 inches look to my hips technique. I already suspected I was not going to love this project and it would be wear around the house to cook and clean in type of dress.

Continué cosiendo las mangas, lo cual salió bastante bien y la cabeza de la manga quedó perfectamente sobre mis hombros. La falda tenía bolsillos. Debería haber practicado más la técnica de coser bolsillos laterales sin añadir 7,5 cm a mis caderas. Ya sospechaba que no me iba a encantar este proyecto y que sería un vestido para usar en casa, para cocinar y limpiar.

The front of the skirt had a front pleat. Now I love a pleat but began to think a front pleat and ruching may have just been a tad over the top.

La parte delantera de la falda tenía un pliegue. Me encantan los pliegues, pero empecé a pensar que un pliegue y un fruncido delantero quizá fueran un poco exagerados.

When I sewed the skirt to the bodice it did fix the back gapping issue - yeah! Oh but now I saw the issue with the ruching in the front and a big gap near the bustline. I had basted on the skirt and took it off to try again. Cotton lyrca strikes again, it just would not lay even to there was just excess fabric in the front when it was attached to the skirt (no issue at all in the back). After playing with it a few times (tearing out basting, basting again) I thought it just needs to be done. I probably should have basted the two front pieces together to try to tame the fabric into submission but sometimes you have to pick your battles. I knew I would not be wearing this dress out in public due to the fabric discoloration. I just serged the front on and called it a done project. I simply serged the sleeves and hem on the dress inside of trying to make it worse with wavy hem lines.

Cuando cosí la falda al corpiño, se solucionó el problema del hueco de la espalda, ¡sí! Ah, pero ahora vi el problema con el fruncido en la parte delantera y un gran hueco cerca del busto. Había hilvanado la falda y me la quité para volver a intentarlo. La licra de algodón ataca de nuevo, simplemente no quedaba uniforme, solo había un exceso de tela en la parte delantera cuando se unió a la falda (no hay problema en absoluto en la parte trasera). Después de jugar con ella unas cuantas veces (arrancando el hilvanado, hilvanando de nuevo) pensé que simplemente necesitaba hacerse. Probablemente debería haber hilvanado las dos piezas delanteras juntas para intentar domar la tela, pero a veces hay que elegir tus batallas. Sabía que no usaría este vestido en público debido a la decoloración de la tela. Simplemente remallé la parte delantera y lo di por terminado. Simplemente remallé las mangas y el dobladillo del vestido por dentro para intentar empeorarlo con las líneas onduladas del dobladillo.

After all that I noticed that the front pleat and the ruching did not match on the front - they were not centered as I would like but again I was done at this point. And the gap on the bust line was simply super annoying. At the end of the adventure the dress is comfortable to wear and it works for wearing around the house.

Después de todo eso, me di cuenta de que el pliegue delantero y el fruncido no coincidían; no estaban centrados como me gustaría, pero, de nuevo, ya estaba harta. Y el hueco en el busto era simplemente molesto. Al final, el vestido es cómodo y sirve para estar en casa.

Lessons learned: listen to your fashion instinct. I thought ruching did nothing for me and I was right.
