Not Quite What I Expected
I found another piece of quilted fabric in my collection when I was seeking out the fabric for the quilted hoodie I made about a month ago. I purchased the Love Notions Coda Coat pattern when it was first released. This time I actually used a suggested fabric.
Now of course I did not have quite enough to make it work perfectly. I swear one of these days I am going to master purchasing the correct amount of fabric for a project. Also I was trying to match up the stripes but that did not work so good when I joined the fronts to the back. No one will notice if I never lift my arms.
In theory I like the curved hem, but it also got removed during the finishing process. The sides were just too wonky and I really saw no other way to help them be slightly normal so it turned into a shorter straight jacket. I am hoping it was because of the weird cutting I needed to do to make all the pieces fit, but you never know.
I did cut out and prepare a hood. After a careful 3 minute consideration I made the executive decision that was not going to make an appearance on this version. The construction of the coat itself was very easy and straight forward. I am saving the hood pieces with the little bit of fabric i have leftover. I think it would make a nice small fanny pack or purse.
What took forever and a day was sewing on the binding. Note to self use extra wide binding next time. This might have been mentioned in the pattern notes but I never been accused of reading those too carefully.
I am a little disappointed in the quality of the quilting on the fabric. Frankly I could have done this bad of a job myself. Lots of thread tails and skipped stiches.
The sleeves are a little long for my tiny T-Rex arms, so I will be wearing it with the sleeves rolled as pictured.
I will also not being ruining the project by trying to add buttonholes. I would not wear this piece buttoned so no need to try to ruin the piece by adding buttonholes. You know how that goes, they are all working fine until the last one and then it just goes to Hell in a handbasket. If I am feeling super lucky I might just add a large button near the collar, but i will wear it at least once to see if that idea takes flight. I plan on styling this with a plain white tshirt and jeans. Should be a cute addition to a casual Fall outfit.
