Saving $ Saturday - Freeze the Extras

I live in a small household. It is my DH and I and our college student daughter. Many items I buy have a tendency to go “bad” before we can use them up. This seems to especially happen with bread and baked goods. We are never one to turn down a slice of bread or a cookie, but we do not need to eat 10 of them.

Costco for instance just began making mini pan au chocolat croissants. There are 20 in a container. Now we could probably eat those 20 in just a few days if we really put our minds to it, but we do not need to. I kept out 8 for us to eat and packaged the others in sets of 4.

I have a vacuum sealer but you can simply place them in a plastic baggie and freeze them. Using a sealer means no freezer burn. I do the same with homemade cookies, bagels and bread. The sourdough bread we make is delicious but we have trouble eating a whole loaf as often as the starter needs to be used.

2 or 4 slices in a bag in the freezer are the perfect serving size. This does mean you have to do a little preplanning to get the item out of the freezer to thaw prior to use. I have been known to take out frozen slices of bread and toast them as is and it works fine for toast.

Everyone pays a lot of money for their food and I hate to see it go to waste. I keep these items in a special section of my freezer so they are easy to grab when needed.
