Upcycle of Comforter
Well first things first, I finished the Valley Skate dress and it turned out lovely.
I then cut into the first of the two elephant orange comforters I recently thrifted. My original plan was to removed the binding. Turns out commercial comforters do not have removeable binding. They simply overlap the backing orange fabric to make a “binding.” This did though making cutting into the fabric easier since I did not have to try to save the binding.
I used the Sinclair Nova sweatshirt pattern. I have made this numerous times. It is just a good basic raglan sleeve sweatshirt. Bonus points because all the pattern pieces were already cut and taped together. The construction (and the fact that I have made this more than 3 times) is so easy I did not even need to look at the patterns directions.
I did do a few modifications. I cut it at a larger size due to the complete non stretch of the pattern. I left off the bottom band and sleeve cuffs. I would have had to source a matching color for the cuff bindings (see non stretch of material) which I was not in the mood to complete. I also tried attaching a bottom band. I was trying to get all fancy with the pattern placement. Nope, that was not working, then I thought I would just reverse and use the orange side. Well the bottom band needed to be recut to make it longer due to non stretch factor. I tried it on without a band and thought it looked just fine.
Of course I added a hood instead of a neckline binding. I think it turned out quite cute. It will have to be packed away since it has hot 80 degrees here today. At least the elephants are all facing the correct direction and not upside down!
