My First MKAL- Part 1

I didn't realize it could be a knitting goal until I found a free MKAL (Mystery Knit Along) through Ravelry. This one was sponsored by Nomadic Knits and was called the Twelve Days of Knitmas. It began on December 26th. The concept of a MKAL is that a designer or host releases a "clue" each day or week. The participants then knit each clue in order. Depending on the designer you might be told it will be wearable item or a decorative item. This is the third year that Nomadic Knits has created a MKAL. I registered to receive the clues. In the first email I was instructed what weight of yarn I needed, the estimated amounts and how many colors I should select. The designer had kits available for purchase but was also open to everyone using whatever yarns they had in their stash. The mystery is that you do not know what the item you are knitting will turn out to be - spoiler alert it is a cowl.

I used all stash yarns for mine. It needed fingering weight of which I have an abundance. I cast on the 150 stitches and I was off on an adventure.

The little stitch markers are to help with the stitch count. I had to cast on this thing 5 times before I got the correct number of stitches on the right needle and no twists. The first 12 rows were a K3 P2 ribbing.

Day 2 you used all the 4 other colors besides your main color and was entitled Stripes. The pattern instructions stated there was no particular order to knit the stripes as far as the 4 contrasting colors you had selected.

Day 3 pattern was entitled Raindrop Lace. The lace was achieved through a combination of yarn overs.

On Day 4 you finally did have to make a decision about what order your contrasting colors would be used. I stayed with the order I had originally selected. The pattern was entitled Tempest and you knit in colorwork.

The purple is the color work portion.

On day 5 you used slipped stitches to create more colorwork. There were not any new knitting stitches for me in this project. I simply got to practice some colorwork more. The clue was entitled Slipped Broken Seed Stitch.

I think this not only shows Day 5 seed stitch but also a clearer picture of the swirls created on Day 4.

Day 6 was easy after all the colorwork. It was just 10 rows of straight knitting.

I will show you the remaining 6 days of stitches next week. It is a very fun knit and makes each day something to look forward too.
