Food Post (puesto de comida)

Well what kind of blog would this be if I did not go on and on about what food I ate while in Honduras. This time I ate like a queen. When I was in the Peace Corps I had very little money (and my village was also limited in food selection) so could not afford to eat out for every meal. Now that I am older and wiser I ate like a real person.

Bueno, ¿qué clase de blog sería este si no hablara sin parar sobre lo que comí en Honduras? Esta vez comí como una reina. Cuando estaba en el Cuerpo de Paz tenía muy poco dinero (y en mi pueblo también había poca variedad de comida), así que no podía permitirme comer fuera todas las comidas. Ahora que soy mayor y más sabia, comí como una persona de verdad.

The hotel where we were staying had breakfast included. A few morning I had a traditional Honduran breakfast. This consists of red beans (fun fact: Honduras loves red beans, not black), eggs, tortillas, cream, ham, plantains, and cheese. One morning banana pancakes arrived.

El hotel donde nos alojábamos tenía desayuno incluido. Algunas mañanas tomé un desayuno tradicional hondureño. Este consiste en frijoles rojos (dato curioso: en Honduras adoran los frijoles rojos, no los negros), huevos, tortillas, crema, jamón, plátanos y queso. Una mañana llegaron panqueques de plátano.

Another morning I had baleadas (a flour tortilla stuffed with beans and egg, cream on the side and a container of cheese). This is a very traditional Honduran snack or meal, especially if you add eggs.

Otra mañana comí baleadas (una tortilla de harina rellena de frijoles y huevo, con crema aparte y un poco de queso). Es una comida muy tradicional hondureño, sobre todo si se le añaden huevos.

Lunches were often delivered to the school for us to enjoy. One day this included Tortilla soup (chicken broth, chicken, avocado, potatoes, cheese, tortilla chips).

Algunos dias nos llevaban almuerzos a la escuela para que los disfrutáramos. Un día incluía sopa de tortilla (caldo de pollo, pollo, aguacate, papas, queso y tortillas).

At night we enjoyed either various restaurants or had food delivered to us. One night this meant Honduran enchiladas. Each country means something different when they use the term enchiladas.

Por la noche, disfrutamos de varios restaurantes o pedimos comida a domicilio. Una noche, esto significaba enchiladas hondureñas. Cada país se refiere a algo diferente cuando usa el término enchiladas.

Another night we went out to eat at a new cool hip hamburger place, Matam Britas . The burger and fries were delicious.

Otra noche salimos a comer a una hamburguesería de Matam Britas. La hamburguesa y las papas estaban deliciosas.

We also enjoyed servings of Honduran tacos. The drinks were always delicious, fresh natural juices.

También disfrutamos de tacos hondureños. Las bebidas siempre estaban deliciosas, jugos naturales recién hechos.

Chicken is a very popular protein selection and we had fried chicken served on a bed of fried plantains with cabbage and fresh tomatoes. The bags of sauces are to pour over the meal. It is very common to have the sauces in these little plastic bags. You bite off the end to open the bag and pour out the sauce.

El pollo es una proteína muy popular, y pedimos pollo frito sobre una cama de plátanos fritos con repollo. Las bolsas de salsas son para verter sobre la comida. Es muy común tener las salsas en bolsitas de plástico. Se abre la bolsa con un mordisco y se vierte la salsa.

I was very well fed on this trip. One of our group was a vegetarian. She was served mostly salads. For the most part dietary restrictions are not really a thing in Honduras. They do understand not eating meat but I am not sure about gluten free options.

Comí muy bien en este viaje. Una persona de nuestro grupo era vegetariana. Le sirvieron principalmente ensaladas. En general, en Honduras no hay restricciones dietéticas. Entienden que no se puede comer carne, pero no estoy segura de las opciones sin gluten.
