International Travel

My DH and I went on a Spring Break adventure to visit our DD who is studying abroad this semester. She is living and studying in Alicante, Spain. I knew when I booked the tickets the travel would be like our own version of The Amazing Race. We left Las Vegas to fly to Washington, DC. The flight was fine and we arrived on time. Our next flight was scheduled from Washington, DC to Brussels, Belgium. At first our flight time was delayed for 15 minutes because the airline was concerned we would arrive to early to the destination. Brussels has a curfew and planes are not permitted to arrive too early in the morning. We boarded the plane and were all settled in our seats when the announcement was made everyone would have to deplane. It turns out every plane at the airport was emptied. The government shut down the air traffic control in Washington, DC for about an hour. We reboarded the flight but it took forever to actually take off. All the air traffic was delayed due to the large number of planes that needed to leave and the incoming arrivals. We arrived in Brussels two hours later than planned.

Our next flight had been scheduled to leave Brussels for Alicante at 9:25 am. The airline had already rebooked our flight. We were told to see a gate agent when we left the plane. We were given new boarding passes and suddenly we were off to Amsterdam and then another flight from there to Alicante.

I was able to add another item to my Bingo Card of knitting. Knitting a Dutch Heel on a sock while in Holland. Not anything I had ever planned, but still fun.

After the little detour to Amsterdam we did finally arrive in Alicante in the late afternoon. It took us 2 full days of travel to get to our final destination but seeing our DD made it all worthwhile. We stayed in a lovely Airbnb apartment for a week. Here is the door to the apartment building. It was called a vintage chic apartment and lived up to the description.

The trip back was better in that we had no unexpected detours to other cities - it was just a very long day of travel. We were so happy to see our baby after 2 months apart.
