Natural Juice (jugo natural)

One of the things I had forgotten about in my years away from Honduras was how much I enjoy the natural fruit juices that are made there to enjoy. Every time it was available I ordered a glass of refresco de Jamaica (Hibiscus drink).

Una de las cosas que había olvidado durante mis años fuera de Honduras era cuánto disfruto de los jugos de fruta naturales que se preparan allí. Siempre que había uno disponible, pedía un vaso de refresco de Jamaica.

Upon my return when in my local Hispanic market I saw a bag of dried hibiscus flowers (the main ingredient in the juice). I ordered some right away and began to make my own version of this delicious juice.

Al regresar a mi mercado hispano local, vi una bolsa de flores de hibisco secas (el ingrediente principal del jugo). Pedí algunas enseguida y comencé a preparar mi propia versión de este delicioso jugo.

I inspected the flowers to make sure they were not dirty or filled with debris (since I did not personally dry them). I placed 6 cups of water in a large pot and brought the water to a boil. Threw in 2 cups of the dried flowers. Remember to turn down the heat and let them simmer for about 15 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat source and let soak for about 2 hours. The juice will be very dark.

Inspeccioné las flores para asegurarme de que no estuvieran sucias ni llenas de residuos (ya que no las sequé personalmente). Puse 6 tazas de agua en una olla grande y la puse a hervir. Agregué 2 tazas de flores secas. Recuerda bajar el fuego y dejarlas hervir a fuego lento durante unos 15 minutos. Retira la olla del fuego y deja remojar durante unas 2 horas. El jugo quedará muy oscuro.

Strain the liquid and discard the flowers. I ended up with about 4 cups of juice. I poured it into a 2 quart pitcher and filled it to the top with more water.

Cuele el líquido y deseche las flores. Obtuve unas 4 tazas de jugo. Lo vertí en una jarra de 2 cuartos y la llené hasta arriba con más agua.

I only added about 1/2 cup of sugar to my recipe but you can certainly add more or less. It is just perfect over ice. According to the internet this juice has many health benefits including lowering blood pressure. There are also quite a few recipes on the internet that give more detailed directions if you need them.

Solo añadí aproximadamente media taza de azúcar a mi receta, pero puedes añadir más o menos. Queda perfecto con hielo. Según internet, este jugo tiene muchos beneficios para la salud, como bajar la presión arterial. También hay bastantes recetas en internet con instrucciones más detalladas si las necesitas.
