New Kitchen Tool

Santa (aka my dear MIL) purchased one of the items on my Christmas wish list - soup cube trays. These are “marketed” as soup cubes but I don’t think the soup gods will find you if you freeze something other than soup inside of them. Just to play it safe the first use was as intended.

I had a ham bone left over from Christmas in my freezer. I did the quick soak method for a pound of navy beans (mostly because yours truly forgot to soak the beans overnight). We had a big pot of delicious bean and ham soup.

Now it is just my DH and I that will eat this deliciousness. I also wanted some soup cubes in the freezer. DH likes to go snowboarding and I like to have him pack lunch and snacks for the trip. Frozen soup cubes will allow him to pack a great snowboarding lunch in a thermos. Nothing is better after snowboarding, snowshoeing or skiing than a warm bowl of soup.

The cubes worked as advertised and now I have 2 nice serving sizes in the freezer. After they were frozen I popped them out and vacuum sealed them. I have since made another pot of this soup using another ham bone I found in a freezer clean up. I remembered to soak the beans overnight for this batch. My DH and I agree the overnight bean soak makes for a better soup.
