Pants Experiment (Experimento con pantalones)

I tried a pants experiment using fabric not for its intended use. Many months ago I bought a polyster type crinkly/wavy fabric. I had bought something similar and made a very nice skirt more than a year ago.

Intenté un experimento con pantalones usando una tela que no era para su uso previsto. Hace muchos meses compré una tela de poliéster arrugada y ondulada. Había comprado algo similar y me hice una falda muy bonita hace más de un año.

I got the genius idea to use the fabric to make a pair of pants. I hadn’t really found any other pattern I wanted to make with the fabric. I thought let’s try it. It will either be a genius idea or a complete flop. I made a pair of Ellie & Mac Feel Pretty Pants a few years ago. They are some of my favorite dressy pants without being too dressy.

Se me ocurrió la genial idea de usar la tela para hacer unos pantalones. No había encontrado ningún otro patrón que quisiera hacer con ella. Pensé: «Vamos a intentarlo». O será una idea genial o un fracaso total. Hace unos años hice unos pantalones Ellie & Mac Feel Pretty. Son de mis pantalones de vestir favoritos sin llegar a ser demasiado elegantes.

I knew from the skirt project that the fabric while really not having any stretch does have lovely drape and flow. Also the fabric I selected was not one of those recommended on the pattern description. Gosh darn I broke another sewing rule.

This fabric can be quite a chore to cut. Also there was no way I could use the fabric to make fabric ties for the pants. Turns out you cannot make buttonholes in this fabric either (thank goodness I never planned on making a button blouse with it). I tried practice buttonholes and even extra interfacing the back of the fabric did not lead to anything actually resembling a buttonhole - grommets it is then.

Cortar esta tela puede ser bastante complicado. Además, no había forma de usarla para hacer lazos para los pantalones. Resulta que tampoco se pueden hacer ojales con esta tela (menos mal que nunca planeé hacer una blusa con botones). Intenté hacer ojales de práctica, pero ni siquiera entretelando la parte trasera de la tela conseguí nada parecido a un ojal; entonces, me conformo con ojales.

I was not too disappointed because grommets are fun to install. You get to hit things and make a hole. But….I did not have the correct size of grommets. Luckily I know how to order things on the internet. A few short days later and my new grommet size arrived.

No me decepcioné demasiado porque instalar ojales es divertido. Puedes golpear cosas y hacer un agujero. Pero… no tenía el tamaño correcto. Por suerte, sé cómo pedirlos por internet. A los pocos días, llegó mi nuevo tamaño de ojal.

You also cannot hem this fabric due to the crinkle. I simply serged the hem on the pant legs. The fabric does not ravel so a serged hem was perfect. These are pretty much exactly as I envisioned - they are drapey and super comfortable. I am thinking I might be able to make a simple pullover top (no buttonholes please) for a matchy matchy outfit.

Tampoco se puede hacer dobladillo a esta tela debido a que se arruga. Simplemente remallé el dobladillo en las perneras del pantalón. La tela no se deshilacha, así que un dobladillo remallado fue perfecto. Son prácticamente tal como los imaginé: tienen caída y son súper cómodos. Estoy pensando en hacer un jersey sencillo (sin ojales, por favor) para un conjunto a juego.
