Quilt Kit Complete
In the quest to complete kits I already own I pulled out an applique table runner. I purchased this at a local quilt shop when I still suffered under the delusion that I would like quilting.
Not only is this a quilting project but applique also - what was I thinking. I forged ahead and I believe I probably broke about almost every quilting rule. Luckily the quilt police do not live at my house.
The first order of business was cutting out the paper shapes I needed. I applied 2 sided interfacing to the fabric pieces included in the kit. I then traced the paper shapes I had cut out onto the paper backed side of the interfacing.
Cutting out all the shapes again was a little tedious. The directions in the kit were a little on the skimpy side, but I managed to get the pieces attached. My sewing machines does many things well, but I always struggle with finding the zigzag stitch. The manual claims it will do a satin like stitch but I have never been able to find it. After much trial and error and moving of levers I found a zigzag stitch I could live with. After ironing on each layer I zigzagged around the piece with a close matching thread.
The kit did not include the backing, binding or framing fabrics. Luckily I have the basic colors in my collection. I pulled out the whites and blacks I had. There was more than enough white to do the first framing and the binding. I was not so lucky with the black. If you look closely the framing on the front and the backing do not quite match in black. Also for some reason the backing fabric collects fuzz like it is its only job on the planet. Thank goodness this will lay on a table and hopefully no one will look closely at the mess that is the backing.
Anyhoo, I got it quilted and hand stitched on the binding. It looks fantastic from a distance or viewed from a galloping horse so works for me. I had little scraps of fabric leftover from the kit. Those will be added to my stash of squares and strips for making a scrap quilt some day. For someone who claims not to enjoy quilting I seem to collect quilting projects.
