I Got Neckband Issues (Tengo problemas con la banda del cuello)

I have made at least 2 Styla Reine shirts. It is a great little pattern and it is free on the website. I wanted to use some of my fancy cotton lycra book character fabric. I was nervous about the project for two reasons. 1. I was using cotton lycra - lots of sewers rave about this fabric but I am not convinced. It always seems to give me issues when I use it. 2. This pattern calls for a knit neckband - the horror. You know to what lengths I will go to avoid attaching a knit neckband.

The last Reine I made turned out super cute and the neckline was no issue. I should have known my good luck had expired. I had the front panel and some semi-matching patterned print. I believe the panel I purchased from Whimsy Fabrics, an online retailer from Canada. I think it was at least a year ago I purchased the panel. I suspect I purchased the all over toss fabric from Jen’s Fabrics. The website for the company is currently down, but you can find them on Facebook. Again the all over toss was purchased over 8 months ago. Sometimes fabric needs to marinate in stash. I did not buy quite enough to make a long sleeved version and I was cutting it close with the yardage I had. Someday I might learn how to actually order the correct yardage so I can stop playing fabric chicken with every project I attempt.

I actually wasn’t that upset about shortening the sleeves. A lady of a certain age needs clothes that are not heat inducing and can survive a hot flash. Well it was looking pretty good until the neckline arrived. The gathering on the sleeve fronts went pretty well. I put cuffs on the sleeves and I am still not convinced this was the correct choice, but my fashion consultant (DD) assured me she liked the look of the cuffed sleeve rather than just a hemmed look.

La verdad es que no me molestó tanto acortar las mangas. Una mujer de cierta edad necesita ropa que no provoque calor y que resista un sofoco. Bueno, se veía bastante bien hasta que llegó el escote. El fruncido en las mangas delanteras quedó bastante bien. As soon as I attached the neckline I thought oh this looks like it is not going to lay flat. I decided to visit Delusionville and think it might calm down after I sewed the side seams and banded hem. I did the directions of construction out of order. The pattern instructions have you attaching the neckband last. I did it way earlier so I could stew over the neckline for longer.

I had everything else all sewn and looking pretty good. I tried it on and the neckline stood at attention like a newly minted Marine. I have learned something while sewing and that is basting is my best friend. I had only basted on the neckband so I took out the basting stitches and cut the length of the neck band a a little shorter. What you see in the picture below is attempt number 2. If you guessed I will be taking out these basting stitches you are correct. I need to remeasure the neckline opening and cut the band to about 80%.

Hopefully once the neckband decides to behave and lay down it will make the puffiness of the basting on the left sleeve look less like an outfit from an episode of Dynasty from the early 1980s. Once these issues are solved it should be a fun shirt to wear.
