Returning to the Village (Regreso al pueblo)

Of course, I enjoyed working on the library project but another main reason I wanted to return to Honduras is that is was/is my Peace Corps country of service.

Por supuesto, disfruté trabajando en el proyecto de la biblioteca, pero otra razón principal por la que quería regresar a Honduras es que fue/es mi país de servicio en el Cuerpo de Paz.

Bright eyed and bushy tailed I signed up for Peace Corps after I finished my undergraduate degree in history. I grew up on a farm, thank goodness so I had a somewhat useful skill. Peace Corps is often portrayed as a place for lost souls. That might be true but it needs lost souls with serious skills. During my masters degree program I worked as recruiter on college campuses for Peace Corps. The number of kids who would show up at my office with stars in their eyes telling me “I want to help people” was insane. My answer was always great, do you have any skills or experience? Do you have any applicable knowledge or skills besides a good heart that might be useful to others. Also can you pass an FBI background check and are in good health.

Con los ojos brillantes y la energía puesta, me alisté en el Cuerpo de Paz después de terminar mi licenciatura en historia. Crecí en una granja, menos mal que tenía una habilidad bastante útil. El Cuerpo de Paz a menudo se describe como un lugar para almas perdidas. Puede que sea cierto, pero necesita almas perdidas con habilidades serias. Durante mi maestría, trabajé como reclutador en campus universitarios para el Cuerpo de Paz. La cantidad de jóvenes que se presentaban en mi oficina con estrellas en los ojos diciéndome "Quiero ayudar a la gente" era una locura. Mi respuesta siempre era genial: ¿tienes alguna habilidad o experiencia? ¿Tienes algún conocimiento o habilidad aplicable, además de un buen corazón, que pueda ser útil para otros? También, ¿puedes pasar una verificación de antecedentes del FBI y gozar de buena salud?

Anywoo….I served in the Peace Corps Honduras program as an Agribusiness Extensionist. One of the few you will ever meet. The Agbusiness section was an experimental program which only lasted a few years. I am not saying I singlehandly caused Peace Corps to change its mind about the program, but in hindsight I would not say I was a strong reason to keep the program. (In reality Peace Corps does try out different programs depending on host country requests). I believe there may have been 2 cycles of volunteers in the program before Peace Corps decided to just keep those volunteers as agriculture volunteers, if they wanted to help set up businesses as a secondary project that was fine, but was no longer going to be the prime focus.

En fin… Serví en el programa del Cuerpo de Paz en Honduras como extensionista de agronegocios. Uno de los pocos que conocerás. La sección de agronegocios fue un programa experimental que solo duró unos años. No digo que yo solo haya hecho que el Cuerpo de Paz cambiara de opinión sobre el programa, pero en retrospectiva, no diría que fui una razón de peso para mantenerlo. (En realidad, el Cuerpo de Paz prueba diferentes programas según las solicitudes del país anfitrión). Creo que hubo dos ciclos de voluntarios en el programa antes de que el Cuerpo de Paz decidiera mantenerlos solo como voluntarios agrícolas. Si querían ayudar a establecer negocios como proyecto secundario, estaba bien, pero ya no sería el enfoque principal.

After 3 months of training in language and cultural immersion I was assigned to an agency and sent to live in the village of Guinope. I lived there for 2 years. I have always wanted ot return to see what changes has occurred. After finishing the library project I rented a truck and driver for the day to travel to my village. The road has not improved in all the time I have been gone. This is really a place you want to visit, not just a simple drive in the country.

Tras tres meses de formación en inmersión lingüística y cultural, me asignaron a una agencia y me enviaron a vivir al pueblo de Guinope. Viví allí dos años. Siempre he querido volver para ver los cambios. Tras terminar el proyecto de la biblioteca, alquilé un camión con conductor por un día para viajar a mi pueblo. El camino no ha mejorado en todo el tiempo que he estado fuera. Este es un lugar que realmente quieres visitar, no solo un simple paseo por el campo.

I was amazed at the changes. There is electricity all the time now and running water.

Me sorprendieron los cambios. Ahora hay electricidad todo el tiempo y agua corriente.

I walked around the town and found my old house. I rented a room inside of this house. My landlady has since passed away. Her oldest daughter opens the house, but was not in town on the day I visited.

Caminé por el pueblo y encontré mi antigua casa. Alquilé una habitación dentro de ella. Mi casera falleció. Su hija mayor abrió la casa, pero no estaba en el pueblo el día que la visité.

I also found my old office. The agency I worked for no longer works in the village.

También encontré mi antigua oficina. La agencia para la que trabajaba ya no opera en el pueblo.

One of these buildings once housed an agriculture co-op store I helped set up with the farmers in the area.

Uno de estos edificios alguna vez albergó una tienda cooperativa agrícola que ayudé a establecer con los agricultores de la zona.

I was able to find an old co-worker from back in the day. We visited for a few hours and enjoyed a delicious lunch. It was wonderful to return. In some ways it felt like I had never left but in many others it was hard to recognize the place where I spent some of the happiest, but hardest years of my young life.

Pude encontrar a un antiguo compañero de trabajo de antaño. Nos quedamos unas horas y disfrutamos de un delicioso almuerzo. Fue maravilloso regresar. En cierto modo, sentí como si nunca me hubiera ido, pero en muchos otros me costaba reconocer el lugar donde pasé algunos de los años más felices, pero también los más difíciles, de mi juventud.
