Saturday Jam

A coworker has a fig tree in her backyard. She had more figs than she wanted this year so gifted me a bag of them. I have no idea what is the name of the fig, but they were delicious.

I decided to try a fig jam recipe. I am always up for an experiment in the jam making department. I washed them all and them cut them in half. They went into the pot with sugar and the adventure began. I read one recipe online that had you add the sugar to the cut figs and let them macerate overnight in the fridge. In hindsight I should have followed this idea. Figs are hard little things.

I had to cook them down for longer than I expected. I tried to use my immersion blender, but ended up letting the mixture cool a little before using my food processor to smooth out all the little bits.

This is actually the first jam I have ever made with no pectin. It already began to set up upon cooling. No sense turning your jam into a hard rock by adding unneeded pectin.

It tasted good after it was done, but seedy. Then I remembered fig cookies I have eaten in my life also always taste seedy to me. Figs have a lot of microscopic seeds it appears.

I ended up with 8 small jars. One was gifted to the friend who gifted me the figs in the first place. The rest are now living in the jam closet to be gifted at a later time. The next time I will know to do more prep work for the figs and also add a tiny bit of food coloring. The color of the jam is not the most inviting I have ever seen.
